Maxim

Hearing her voice was the balm my troubled soul needed.

‘Who was that?’ Sergei asks, popping his head into my office.

‘Grace.’

Sergei stiffens. ‘Is she okay?’

‘Yes, she was thanking me for our parcel. But what I don’t understand is how she got my phone number.’

‘I was just trying to help.’

I want to yell at him, tell him to not interfere in my life, but instead I say, ‘Thank you.’

He looks surprised. ‘Did she watch the videos?’

I nod.

‘Fuck, I hope that doesn’t trigger her going back to the drugs.’

‘She sounded sad.’

‘Maybe because she might be missing someone.’

‘As if—she hates me.’

‘I think hate is a strong word, maybe more like “confused”.’

‘Confused about me?’

This makes the old man laugh. ‘She likes you, anyone can see that. But the situation was fucked up from the start. I mean, you kidnapped her. That ruins a relationship real fast. What I’m saying is, you two had instant chemistry but the whole kidnapping thing screwed with whatever feelings you have.’

I suppose he has a point.

‘Then what should I do?’

‘What do you want to do?’

I give him a look; I hate this answering a question with a fucking question shit.

‘Do you like her?’

I nod.

‘Do you just want to sleep with her?’

My eyes narrow at him. ‘None of your business, old man.’

‘I mean, do you just want to, you know, wham bam?’ He gyrates his hips.

‘Never, ever do that again in my presence, do you hear me?’

‘So, judging by your mood, she wouldn’t be a one-night stand. Do you see a future with her?’

‘How could we ever have a future? I am an assassin for the Bratva, I kill people for a living. She is an ex-sex slave, and a former law student. I kidnapped her and nearly delivered her to the devil. Her family is never going to accept me. How could they ever forgive for that?’

‘The fact that you have even thought about how her family would accept you speaks volumes about how you feel about her.’

‘No shit, I like her. I’m miserable without her, I never thought that I could love someone until she came into my life.’ I freeze. What the fuck did I just say? Sergei’s eyes are wide with shock. I shake my head. ‘It just slipped out.’

‘No, you said what was really going on inside when you weren’t thinking.’ Sergei pats my head. I shoo him away.

‘It doesn’t matter, Sergei. We can’t be together; we will never be together. So just drop it. We need to work out how to get Elena back and find out where the hell Anna is.’
